Do Not Tamper with Your Smoke Alarms
Most victims of fire are injured or perish due to smoke inhalation before they are burned. Because of this, smoke detectors are critical to saving lives.
Keep Flammable Materials Away from Heat Sources
Keep space heaters at least three feet away from anything that can burn. Only use heaters that shutoff automatically if tipped over.
Use Electrical Appliances Safely
Avoid overloading outlets and use power strips with surge protectors.
Inspect electrical cords for damage and replace them if they are frayed or worn.
Unplug appliances when not in use. It's a small habit that can make a big difference.
Be Careful while you are Cooking
Never leave cooking unattended. Stay in the kitchen while you are frying, grilling, or broiling food. Using a timer to remind you is a simple and effective tool.
Keep flammable items like towels, paper, and curtains away from the stove.
Never put water on a grease fire. If a grease fire starts, remember to:
- Turn off the heat source. Immediately turn off the stove or heat source. Do not attempt to move the pot or pan, as this can cause the burning oil to splash.
- Cover the flames: Use a metal lid or a cookie sheet to cover the pot or pan. This will cut off the oxygen supply and help smother the fire. Avoid using glass or ceramic lids, as they can shatter.
- Use baking soda or salt: If the fire is small, you can pour baking soda or salt onto the flames. Do not use flour or sugar, as they can make the fire worse.
