Member Spotlight: Asheville Housing Authority
For nearly four years, the Asheville Housing Authority operated without a dedicated Safety Committee.
In June 2024, the Compliance and Internal Audit Officer, Elaine Scott, was tasked with reestablishing the committee. With renewed dedication, the Safety Committee made significant advances that enhanced both safety awareness and preparedness.
Staring small, the committee executed three productive meetings. At the most recent meeting, the committee hostedOfficer IssiahSenyakfrom the Asheville Police Department as a guest speaker. Officer Senyakled an in-depth discussion on effectively responding to an active shooter situation.
Building on the momentum of this well received training, the plan has expanded to host active shooter response sessions at each of the Housing Authority properties. This initiative aims to equip residents and staff with the knowledge and skills needed to respond confidently in emergencies.
Additionally, this presented the opportunity to strengthen the partnership between local law enforcement, the housing authority and its residents which is a critical component to ensuring the safety and well-being of our residents, staff, and the larger community.
NCHARRP would like to recognize Asheville Housing Authority and their team for demonstrating dedication to make a difference and taking the steps to organize a pathway for success!
