NCHARRP Safety Coaching Videos
What Do Your Safety Leaders Know about Safety?
Changing unsafe behaviors takes repetition, practice, and, most importantly, consistent coaching. In most companies, managers, supervisors, and leaders have safety responsibilities but lack the necessary skills to be truly effective in this role.
Coaching the Coaches
We need those responsible for safety to be able to coach others on safe job performance. Most are not comfortable nor effective at coaching others on safety because they have not been taught or coached how to do it. This challenge is where the opportunity for video coaching comes in. We need a way to coach the coaches to be better at playing their critical role in safety.
Video Coaching
Coaching sessions are not long, but they are frequent. We need to keep it simple, and we need to keep it coming. At its essence, safety is not complicated. It is safe conditions coupled with safe behaviors that lead to safe performance. It only gets complicated when we must do safety with people. People are complicated, and understanding how to motivate a wide variety of people is the key to effective safety coaching. We need a process that is simple, repeatable, and untiring.
The Process
While there are many forms and options for video coaching, it simply involves an email list and a steady stream of single topic, brief messages on relevant safety topics. Over the past five years, the main ways that NCHARRP members' staff get hurt is through slip, trip, and fall incidents and strains, sprains, and overexertion causing musculoskeletal injury. The videos provided cover a multitude of topics that lead to these types of injuries. How many of these injuries does your housing authority staff have regularly? How many could have been avoided?
What is your plan to coach the safety coaches?
NCHARRP Video Coaching is the next generation of risk management communication and injury prevention. It focuses on short, 90-second to 3-minute, single-topic videos. We recognize that simply knowing facts does not change anyone's behaviors, so they offer equal parts motivation and information. While we have built out the system with more than 400 generic videos, customized options can be made available.
How it Works
NCHARRP uses the names and emails of the member housing authority's staff provided that should receive the coaching and activate your safety campaign. The emails roll out every two weeks with little text and a hyperlink to one video from the campaign. The list of recipients can be edited at any time during the year by simply providing your updates to NCHARRP. Emails will come from "NCHARRPRiskControl noreply@reachout365.com". Be sure to add them to your IT list of approved senders.
Does it Work?
The short answer is yes. The long answer is made evident in a large case study performed by NCHARRP's vendor partners who manage a member captive. To increase the value of membership within the captive and to decrease losses within the group, the captive offered video coaching to the members as a benefit. Of the 32 members at the time, 15 began using the service. 5 of the 15 members were highly engaged video coaching users. Highly engaged members had a higher percentage of the population assigned as recipients, and their viewing habits were stronger, as encouraged by the member's internal processes. After several years of use, a five-year loss run was pulled and analyzed for equal periods before and after the launch date for each of the members using video coaching. The highest-performing member experienced a 57% drop in claims. On average, the high-performing member group had a reduction of 30% in claims. All members that used the video coaching system had an average drop of 13%. Members not using the service experienced an average increase in claims of 31%.
